WWDC Impressions
What a great 2 weeks its been. E3, the launch of the Palm Pre, and WWDC have now come and gone. I can’t say much about the Pre (since i don’t own one), except that it looks awesome, and does a lot of the things i wish my iPhone did. However, i did follow WWDC hoping to glean some new information on the direction of Apple. Here’s what i found out.
New macbook pros! Unibody construction (which means no removable battery), and new models (13″ macbook pro). I was hoping Apple would FINALLY make a 15″ macbook as i find the pro to be a bit expensive for that added sheen of titanium/gunmetal, but i guess they went the other direction instead. After all why make cheaper products when people will obviously shell out for more expensive ones?
After this they showed off Snow Leopard. They started by making fun of how Windows 7 is just a refinement of Vista. The funny thing is…. Snow Leopard just looked like a refinement of Leopard. It’s nice that it’s only $29 though. I remember Leopard was $129.
On to the iPhone stuff! I mean lets be honest this is the juicy core of Apples business right now right (iPods and iPhones)? They started off by showing the new features in iPhone OS 3.0, which i must say are pretty nice. I’m always happy to receive free software updates that extend the capabilities of a device. Of course if you’re an iPod touch user you get shafted for $9.95. Good thing i’m not! So iPhone OS 3.0 add’s copy/paste (FINALLY!), push notification (FINALLY!!!), multi language support (finally?), HTML 5 support, and a bunch of other features if you’re a mobileMe subscriber (like remote wipe, and a phone finder feature). HTML 5 support…. fuck you apple. To me this sounds like a way to get around including a flash player in the iPhone. Oh yeah… to show off these features Apple brought on a slew of iPhone developers. This was by far the most boring part of WWDC. Yes, we know you have a shitload of developers. They also took this opportunity to take a jab at Palm by saying they only have 18 apps on the pre. Yeah….. classy apple the fuckin thing just came out 2 days before WWDC what do you expect.
Finally after almost 2 hours, Apple unveils their new iPhone…. the 3GS. It has video shooting/editing, a compass, auto focus, a 3 mega pixel camera, longer battery life, voice control, and is the price of the current iPhone 3G. Oh yeah did i mention the current iPhone 3G is going to drop in price to $99? That’s HUGE, but seeing as i’m one of the current iPhone 3G owners and my phone isn’t even 6 months old yet, Apple can go fuck themselves.
This is something i’ve been noticing all too often with Apple. They are completely willing to tell their early adopters, ‘Ha! Fuck you very much for overpaying for a shittier version of our product. Hey! Why don’t you upgrade to the latest and greatest?’ So what did i really take away from WWDC? That i’m pretty much done with Apple and their products. I now have a G5 desktop that isn’t supported, an old iPod that isn’t supported, a macbook pro that i doubt will be supported for much longer (it’s a core duo instead of core 2 duo), and an iPhone 3G that will probably last another 2 years. Fuck you, and fuck your pretty ass gadgets Apple.
