The Death of Talent

June 22, 2009 By: houkah Category: Music

Lately i’ve been noticing an overuse of a little voice synthesis software known as auto-tune.  The first time i had heard this was on a song by Cher.  It has since become completely ubiquitous in modern music.  Especially amongst people who can’t sing.  I’m looking at you Kanye.

The problem with auto-tune is it makes people who can’t sing seem like they can.  Now we’ve always used tools in the past to heighten our shortcomings.  This is different though.  This software can force any persons voice to go into tune, effectively turning any person into a singer.

So what’s wrong with that?  Well, the people who actually have talent will be lost under the deluge of mediocrity coming from those that don’t.  Popular music is already a disgusting wasteland of formulaic, paint by numbers dreck.  Imagine if we remove actual singing talent from the equation as well.  We should relegate auto-tune to it’s real purpose.  Comedy.
